Small business super payments

The ATO Small Business Superannuation Clearing House has closed. What now?

The Small Business Superannuation Clearing House closed permanently on 1 July 2026. Small businesses that used the free ATO service must now use a SuperStream-enabled alternative. This guide explains what changed, what you need to use instead and where ABAFlow may support the bank-payment part of your workflow.

What changed

The ATO’s Small Business Superannuation Clearing House has closed.

The SBSCH accepted its final transactions on 30 June 2026 and closed permanently from 1 July 2026. Businesses can no longer use it to submit new super contributions or make the associated payments.

The service previously allowed eligible small businesses to submit employee contribution information and make one consolidated payment. It then distributed the money to employees’ nominated super funds and supported the employer’s SuperStream process.

If your business previously relied on the SBSCH, you now need another service to transmit contribution information and coordinate the matching payment. An ABA bank file may form part of that process, but it does not perform the clearing-house functions by itself.

Your replacement process

What small businesses need to use instead.

Your replacement must support the SuperStream information flow as well as the method used to make the related payment.

01

Payroll software

Some payroll platforms calculate contributions, send the required SuperStream data and coordinate payment as part of the normal pay-run process.

02

Super fund service

Some super funds provide an employer contribution portal or online service. Check whether it supports all funds used by your employees.

03

SuperStream clearing house

A commercial clearing house can receive contribution information and one payment, then distribute the contributions to multiple employee funds.

Before choosing an option, confirm that it sends the required contribution information through SuperStream and supports the timing and payment method your business needs. See the ATO’s SBSCH transition guidance.

Where ABAFlow can help

Prepare the bank-payment component of a compatible workflow.

ABAFlow converts payment data from a spreadsheet or compatible software into a validated ABA file for upload to Australian internet banking.

It may be useful when your payroll, clearing-house or super fund service supplies the destination account, payment amount and matching reference, and supports payment by direct bank transfer or ABA file. ABAFlow can validate those payment fields, present the payment total for review and generate the bank file without retaining the uploaded CSV or generated ABA file.

A compatible workflow

How the payment and reporting steps fit together.

  1. 01

    Prepare payroll and super data

Calculate the contributions and confirm employee, fund and payment details in your payroll or super process.

  2. 02

    Complete the SuperStream step

Use your payroll software, super fund service or clearing house to submit the required contribution information.

  3. 03

    Create the ABA payment file

Where that process supports an ABA payment, use ABAFlow to validate the supplied bank details and generate the file.

  4. 04

    Upload and reconcile

Upload the file to your bank, authorise the payment and reconcile it with the corresponding SuperStream submission.

Frequently asked questions

SBSCH, SuperStream and ABA payment files.

Short answers to the questions small businesses are asking after the SBSCH closure.

What replaced the Small Business Superannuation Clearing House?

There is no single government replacement for the SBSCH. Employers need to choose another SuperStream-enabled option, such as payroll software with integrated super payments, a commercial clearing house or a contribution service offered by a super fund. Confirm that the service handles both the contribution information and the payment method your business needs.

Is ABAFlow an SBSCH alternative?

ABAFlow can support one part of the transition, but it is not a complete replacement for the SBSCH. Where your payroll or super provider supports payment by ABA file, ABAFlow can create the bank-payment file. It does not perform the SuperStream reporting, verification, distribution or reconciliation functions of a clearing house.

Can ABAFlow create a super payment ABA file?

Yes, where an ABA file is supported by your chosen payroll, clearing-house or super fund process. Use the destination account, amount and payment reference supplied by that service. ABAFlow can validate those payment fields and generate the file for upload to Australian internet banking.

Do I still need SuperStream?

Yes. SuperStream carries the employee and contribution information that allows super funds to identify and allocate the money. An ABA file moves the payment through the banking system; it does not replace the related SuperStream submission. Many employers therefore need both parts of the workflow.

What changes under Payday Super?

From 1 July 2026, employers generally need to pay super guarantee contributions with each payday rather than quarterly, and contributions generally need to reach employees’ super funds within seven business days. This makes a repeatable reporting and payment process more important. Confirm the current requirements and processing times with the ATO and your chosen provider.
